Interview with Shine Carbon

Ahead of Carbon Black World 2026 we spoke to Biswajit Paul, Technical Director at Shine Carbon and Chemicals.

Q1. Your presentation at this year’s Carbon Black World will cover Specialty Carbon Black for Electrical Vehicles. A) Why is it important for others in the industry to hear this message? B) What are some of the key take-aways?

A) The topic of my speech on Carbon Black World 2026 is “Special Blacks for Electric Vehicles (EVs)” because EV uses one or more electric motors to draw power from an on-board battery pack. Therefore, EVs are heavy due to those large batteries. Hence, EV tires need to be specially designed to handle the extra weight without compromising safety and performance because extra weight is putting extra wear on tires.

Finally, to focus on those performances, innovative carbon blacks are essential because commercially available ASTM carbon blacks (i.e., N134, N234, N347) don’t play essential roles of such applications.

B) Some of the key take-aways, for tire researchers or rubber compounders, are to know how to improve the efficiency of EV tire compounds by using Shine Carbon’s “EVTB2” reinforcing black and to make it enable for a longer life span because it is important to know as EVTB2 will be addressing such challenges by delivering low rolling resistance with increased tread durability

Q2. What are the main challenges that the industry is facing and how do you think that this conference can address them?

The furnace carbon black industry is facing the unique challenges posed by the heavier weight and higher torque of EVs compared to traditional ICE vehicles i.e., faster wear with higher rolling resistance as these two properties are indirectly proportional. This new or specialized rubber compounds made with our “EVTB2” black will address those unique challenges

Because, technological advancements have made us (i.e., carbon black industries) to produce many customized furnace grades with typical combinations of surface area and structure.

Shine Carbon is not the exception and have also expressed its determination to promote the industrial upgrading of India's specialty carbon black through Carbon Black World 2026 platform, to improve the specialty carbon black industry and change the future of India's specialty carbon black industry.

Q3. What do you think will be some of the most interesting advancements in materials or processing in the near future?

As a part of the carbon black industry chain, rCB is in line with the needs of green and sustainable development of the industry, and it will take an increasingly good proportion in the material industry in the near future, and its application will be more and more extensive.

Increased adoption of digitalization and automation technologies in production processes will optimize/transform it to a low-energy consumption and green energy utilization process.

Also, the raw material selection of carbon black in the whole industry will be transferred to new recyclable materials from fossil because, low carbon emissions, renewable energy and clean raw materials will be the focus of the future development of the carbon black industry.

Q4.What are you most looking forward to hearing and/or seeing at Carbon Black World 2026?

Carbon Black World is the world's leading forum focusing mainly on furnace carbon black processing and application respectively and, after COVID-19, it was held in Europe (2024) then in U.S.A (2025) and now in Asia (2026). Therefore, I feel to be updated with world-wide technology sharing in different fields of upstream and downstream of the carbon black industry.

I want to learn and discuss the future development direction of the carbon black industry with other experts, and explore our technology development direction that is more in line with the needs of the industry.
